CoachTrak: Coaching Skills for Managers

The Layered Design of the Coach Training Program

The design of the Business Coach Training for Managers is based on the successful NCSU Business Coaching Certificate program developed by Brian Nichol and Lou Raye Nichol. The content has been adapted for the special need of managers and executives who want to become proficient as a coach with their direct reports. The program has a layered design to enable the transfer of learning to the workplace.

  • Managers learn theory and practice skills in workshop settings.
  • They recruit and coach 2 or 3 clients.
  • Their work with clients is supported by supervision groups during the workshops.
  • Each manager is matched up with a mentor coach to get a direct experience of being coached.

Coach Training Workshops
The managers study the theory and practice of Coaching in a series of four workshops. Training is spread over four months so that there is time for the managers to develop their coaching skills through systematic practice in their workplace. Managers need a program of this duration so that they can assimilate the theory and models of coaching and make it a part of the way they work and lead their people.

Coaching Practicum
Each manager recruits 2 or 3 clients to coach for a total of 20 coaching hours. Coaching their clients gives them the opportunity to practice the theory and skills they learn during the workshop. So that they can be more relaxed in practicing their skills it is preferable that their first clients are not direct reports.

Coaching Supervision Group
During workshops (2, 3 and 4) managers review their experience of coaching clients in small groups lead by a member of the training staff. These supervision sessions help the managers to reflect on their own practice and work through the issues they are encounter in their work with their clients.

Mentor Coach
Each manager is matched with a mentor coach. They work with their coach in a 45 minute coaching session 3 times a month for a period of 3 months. The mentor coach provides the manager with a direct experience of coaching which they can relate to what they are learning in the workshops. Their coach provides a role model for their own development as a coach

360 Degree Feedback Survey
A 360 Degree Feedback survey is administered for the managers at the beginning and after the program. This procedure provides an initial assessment of the manager’s competence as a coach for the manager. The feedback is confidential to the manager and the manager’s coach. The survey is administered after the program so that we can assess the effectiveness of the training.

CoachtheCoach: Supervision and Supervision Training

Supervision is a powerful support process that helps coaches bring greater value to their clients. Coaches use the process to review their cases, think through their relationship with the client, get outside perspectives and feedback, and identify options and actions. Supervision helps coaches break through frustrating impasses and increase their repertoire of responses with their clients.

In the NCSU Business Coaching Certificate Program, participants often remark that some of the most significant learning comes from their participation in supervision groups. We provide:

  • One-on-one or group supervision to coaches.
  • In-house training to help internal coaches develop a supervision process for their work with clients.
